Second Period - BQ6: Reflection

On your rationale handout, you made a prediction. Your assignment is to answer one of the following: How has the novel deviated from your prediction? Or, how has your novel followed your prediction?
Then, list the two McKee quotes you will be using for your poster presentation.

Format

First and Last Name

Original prediction

How your prediction changed or stayed (relatively) the same – in detail!

“Quote #1”
“Quote #2”

Note:
  • You do NOT have to comment on a peer’s post this time! (:
  • If you ended up changing your book in the beginning of the project, you will not be writing about your prediction. Instead, you will write what surprised you. How did your ideas of the characters, plot, and other elements change as the story progressed? You still have to include two McKee quotes in your post.
Due: Wednesday February 13 by midnight.

My original prediction was that the book would be fast paced and exciting.

It stayed relatively the same, although the last 200 pages was the fast paced because that's when they battled the king and his servants. Overall it was very exciting because there were numerous twists like when they found hidden dragon eggs and when the protagonist decides to leave the country at the end of the book.

"He wondered what strange things they might encounter within its wild reaches"

"To his astonishment, he scored a hit, wetting the tip of Brisingr with the king's blood"

My Original prediction was that the book would have the scorpion be symbolic in some way.

My prediction was true. The scorpion in the book was the Alacran family crest. This crest allowed certain people to unlock hidden passages and rooms. Matt used this crest to try to escape from his pursuers, but was later caught.

"The function of structure is to provide progressively building pressures that force characters into more and more difficult dilemmas.

My original prediction was that someone was going to die and may be a murder mystery.

I predicted correctly. Not just one person, but a lot of people died in this book. Through the tribulations of finding out who was the murderer to the kidnapper to the victims, it was a murder mystery.

#1- "True character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure-the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation, the truer the choice to character's essential nature."

#2-"The revelation of deep character in contrast or contradiction to characterization is fundamental in major characters."

My original prediction was that "a boy was to fall in love with a girl, and complications would come along the way.

My prediction was true, although vague, but in the story, after Miles (Protagonist) fell in love with Alaska, his life had changed, but then when she died (complications), his life again changed.

#1 -"The inciting incident radically upsets the balance of forces in the protagonist's life"

#2 -"True character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure-the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation, the truer the choice to character's essential nature."

My original prediction was that the main character (Eli) was going to run away to the forest after getting fed up with the people arguing in his life.

My prediction was true in some parts, because Eli did run away when people were fighting sometimes. However, he ran away to be alone and always came back. However, for most of the novel, Eli just observed the arguments the people in his life were having, while trying to work through it all in his mind.

"The protagonist has a conscious desire."

My prediction was that "a girl will be possessed or something possessed will follow her" which was partly right. Something possessed did follow her, which was St. John. He was mot exactly possessed in the ghost sense but he was a vampire. That was not exactly what I meant though when I said something possessed will follow her. The possessed thing in the story didn't follow Rayne, Rayne followed it. So my prediction did not exactly coincide with my novel.
"The protagonist has a conscious desire." And "The protagonist may also have a self-contradictory or unconscious desire."

My original prediction was that because there was a girl with a blood stained dress on the cover of the book, it would have a storyline that had something to do with murder. There actually were quite a few murders in the book, some of which I didn't expect at all. The person, or in this case creature, who was behind those murders was also a surprise to me. My prediction was somewhat correct, but a little too vague to be completely accurate. This is because the storyline was about more than just murder.

I predicted that Nora was going to struggle adapting to her new life in America, but at the end she would be happy with her new life. My prediction was correct; although, I did not foresee Nora's father dying.

I predicted that my book, Lie, would be about a teenage girl that is trying to figure out the secrets of the new town she has moved into.
The real plot differed greatly from my guess of the novel’s storyline. Skylar had lived in Long Island her whole life, actually, and it is Jimmy Seeger, her boyfriend, that is new to town. After he gets arrested for a crime, questions start to rise, putting everyone at risk. Unlike my prediction, she knew everything that had happened on that fateful night; there were no secrets kept from her. In fact, she was the one keeping them.

#1: “A hidden nature waits concealed behind a façade of traits.”
#2: “The conscious and unconscious desires of a multidimensional protagonist contradict each other.”

Before I read the book, I predicted that the girl would fall in love with a boy that lives on Cinnamon Street. I also predicted that the boy may be new to town; however, my prediction was not very accurate. The girl, Louise, ends up falling in love but not with a boy on Cinnamon Street or a boy new to town. The boy she ends up liking was her best friend. I didn't think that was going to happen when I picked the book, so it was a surprise!

#1 "The protagonist may also have a self-contradictory unconscious desire."
#2 "The protagonist must be empathetic; he may or may not be sympathetic."

I predicted that my main character, Lucy, lived in a house that was full of dark secrets and that she wanted to escape.
My prediction was relatively the same. Lucy did live in a home that had secrets but I thought the fact that her mom was a hoarder wasn't that bad. I thought that the secret would be something that was more intense. However, Lucy didn't escape from her home even though that was her one desire.
" No matter what they say, no matter how they comfort themselves, the only way we ever come to know characters in depth is through the choices they make under pressure."
" The inciting incident radically upsets the balance of forces in the protagonist's life."

I predicted that my protagonist would solve a case then become a target his self and have to protect himself.

My prediction was mostly wrong the detective did solve the case but the cerial killer was killing for somehting he thought was a good cause. He was a enviromentalist extremest, if he saw someone throw away a bottle instead of recycling, it would make him so angry he would want to pull out his gun and kill them. He gave all his victoms a test and if they passed he sent him or her home but if they failed then they were killed. He was trying to point out riality to everyone.

My prediction is that the person who had been mysteriously instant messaging the main character was the popular girl that ignored him in school.

I was correct. There wasn't really much depth in that part of the book and I actually second guessed myself plenty of times because I didn't think it would be that easy. Maybe that had been what the author wanted though, too keep it so simple that people would psych themselves out.

#1 "The protagonist may also have a self-contradictory unconscious desire."
#2 "The inciting incident radically upsets the balance of forces in the protagonist's life."

My prediction was that there was a ship abandoned out at sea and that the other pirates and shipowners try to steal it, but there are great fights about it.

I was wrong. The ship that i thought was abandoned was just a crime scene in which people were killed on. Also, there were no pirates, only people who were hired guns on a mission to save their friends;however, I was right about the ship owners trying to steal the boat. Finally, there was not really a final battle or fight. There was just a circumstance in which the leader of one group got killed and the others retreated.

#1 "A character must be credible."
#2 "The protagonist may also have a self-contradictory unconscious desire."

My prediction was that the story was going to talk about the Final Four which was a college basketball event.

My prediction was partly right, but there was also more to it. The story had mentioned about the game many times, but the main parts to the story were about the players' lives and what had happened before the game. It had talked about the important events that had happened to the players' lives before the game had happened.

#1 "The inciting accident that radically upsets the balances of forces in the protagonist's life."

My original prediction of the book, Legend, was that June will track down Day, then find out something that makes them friends.
This was basically correct; however, I didn't know what the "something" was. Also, they didn't become friends until the last few chapters, and I thought that they would become allies earlier in the story.

My original prediction was that Lena would not be saved in the end and would go dark. I was some what correct with the fact that she is half dark and half light since on the night of her sixteenth birthday there was not a half moon.

My original prediction, by looking at just the cover (two girls standing alone amid a flock of crows), was simply that something bad would happen in the book.

I was quite correct - something very bad did, in fact, take place in the small Maryland town. Two murders happened in the woods across town from Nora's house. The book was essentially about her learning to cope with loss and fear and death, and was sometimes narrated from the viewpoints of two others.

Quote #2: "Other characters may be dogged, even inflexible, but the protagonist in particular is a willfull being."
