First Period - BQ4: Memorable Moment

Prompt: For this post, I want you to think of the greatest moment of impact in your novel and tell us about it. It could be a moment of conflict, of surprise, or of joy in your novel. You could also think about a part of the novel that meant something to you personally.  Your post could talk about anything from a car chase that made your heart race to a moment of confrontation between two people that made you angry to a great part of a love story. Write about anything that made you think – that made you feel - more deeply than any other moment. Get creative!

Directions:

  • Describe the moment (in context – we need some kind of scene to visualize) that affected you most.
  • Write a quote from that moment that captures the significance of the moment.
  • Tell us why you chose this – why it had the greatest impact for you.
  • Comment in any (respectful) way you’d like (:

As the small cargo plane flew across the ocean to Hawaii, it began to feel sudden shudders. At first, they were small but they slowly got more violent throughout the flight. The main character "Robie" tries to calm herself down, by scanning the pilots for any signs of panic. Then all at once, the plane shook harder than it ever had,it seemed to stop the turbulence. But then Robie notices that the left engine propeller had stopped spinning. As she feels the plane rapidly descending, the co-pilot rushes out and gives her a flotation device. He Then mouths the Words, "we're going down".

That sounds like a very suspenseful book. It kind of reminds me of Hatchet.

This book seems really good because of the way you wrote just enough to make it interesting by leaving the reader hanging. It also gives hints or foreshadows to what might happen in the book.

"That weird metallic screech was still very loud, splashing down from the sky. What was that? Dizzy, a drill-bit of pain coring into her brain, she dragged her head up, struggling to focus. At first, she thought she must be passing out, because the sky was getting blacker and blacker--but then she realized the blackness was moving.
Birds. There were birds. Not just a few or a flock, but hundreds and hundreds, thousands. All kinds, all shapes, all sizes. And the birds were everywhere, in the sky above and exploding up from the valley below in a spiraling, screaming funnel cloud. They weren't organized, not following the way a flock does, but smashing into one another, either because there were so many or the pain that had her in its iron grip had them, too."

This part of the book is describing the event of the EMP going off. It messes with the electromagnetic field, causing birds to loose sense of direction. There is also smoke, which makes it even more obvious that it was a bomb.

I chose this part of the book because this is when you realize the situation. A bomb is going off while she is over 40 miles from home. Dead birds are blanketing the ground, and she's in agonizing pain.

This scene seems to bring a lot of suspense and an aghast ambience to the story. I can feel something uprising and it impacts me as well.

I think your book seems very dark and moody in a similar fashion to my book. The birds part was especially impactful.

in my novel, Looking for Alaska, Chip and Alaska are looking to get back at Kevin. Kevin pulled a prank on Alaska and flooded her room. There are three parts to there plan. Part one: light fireworks, near the Principles house, every minute. Part two: out blue hair dye in Kevin's hair gel and conditioner. Part three: send out a progress report saying that Kevin is failing there of his classes." The Great Perhaps was upon us, and invincible. The plan may have had faults, but we did not." This quote magnifies how confident they feel about their plan, and themselves. They know they will not mess up. The feeling of accomplishing this plan will be ineffable. I chose this scene in the book because it actually got my heart racing, I know it sounds cheesy. This scene was full of action and I loved it.I just hoped that they would not botch the plan, and they didn't. It was exciting to see how they pulled it off.

This book seems really interesting and has a lot of excitement! From the section previewed above, this makes me want to read the whole book and find out how the conflict between Alaska and Chip began and how they are going to resolve it!

This book seems to have a good amount of action and looks like you can make a good hook from what you say.

The passage I chose depicts Vimes and Carcer, the serial killer, after the rooftop chase. Vimes is holding Carcer down, but something strange is brewing.

"Thunder rumbled again. The sky wasn't just storm black now. There were pinks and purples in the clouds, as though the sky was bruised. Vimes could see the clouds moving like snakes in a sack, to an endless sullen rumbling. He wondered if the wizards had been messing about with the weather. Something was happening to the air. It tasted of burned metal and flints. A weathercock on top of the dome began to spin round and round.
'I didn't think you was stupid, Mister Vimes...'
'What?' said Vimes, looking down suddenly. Carcer was smiling cheerfully.
'I said I didn't think you was stupid, Mister Vimes. I know a clever copper like you'd think I'd got two knives.'
"Yeah, right,' said Vimes. He could feel his hair trying to stand on end. Little blue caterpillars of light were crackling over the ironwork of the dome, and even over his armor.
    'Mister Vimes?'
'What?' Vimes snapped. Smoke was rising from the weathercock's bearings.
'I got three knives, Mister Vimes,' said Carcer, bringing his arm up."

    The lightning struck.

At this point, Vimes and Carcer are transported back in time, but they don't immediately realize it. I really like this because the description of the scene builds tension, and the it ends with the simple statement "The lightning struck."

The part of my novel that was the most personal for me was a side discussion. It was when Tom was in the hospital talking with his doctor about his grandmother, and stated how he felt about her. The doctor says, “She must mean a lot to you.” And Tom replies, “She means everything to me.” These two quotes were very personal for me emotionally. Just like Tom said, my grandmother means everything to me as well. She is who I am close with, friendly with, and depend on the most. Without her, I just wouldn’t feel the same.

    1. I can relate to how you and your character feels. I'm very close with my grandparents, especially my grandmother. I learned most of my manners from my grandmother and she teaches me a lot. Your novel seems interesting.

In my novel, Zen and the Art of Faking it, the main character,San, teaches a kid in his gym class a skill. A guy named Mike was trying to shoot a basket while playing basketball and couldn't get any in. San told Mike to get ready to throw again and screamed in his face every time for about three times. Mike figured out that he wasn't focused, therefore couldn't score. When he finally made a basket, he asked San, "How did you do that?" Mike thought that since San is Asian, he had cast a spell on him, but San replied, "I did nothing." I chose this part of the story because it shows San's determination and confidence in his beliefs.

In my novel, all these things i've done, Anya and her little sister find themeslves in a life or death situation. It was a Tuesday after school, and Anya and her little sister, Natty, had been walking home. Natty had been mad at Anya for an incident that had happened with a boy earlier that day. The both of them were cutting through a park in Manhatten to get home. Natty decided to run ahead of Anya, which is dangerous in this novel. By the time Anya had caught up to Natty, she was behind a glass section of a building. Anya then realized Natty wasn't alone, for there was a boy standing next to her, pointing a gun to her head, and demanding for her shoes. This is the most affectice part of the story because Anya steps in front of the gun to save her sister. When Anya says, "I stepped between my sister and the boy.My baby sister screamed", I was alomst in tears because I knew that is what my brother would have done for me. I could see the love and this moment showed Anya's true character.

Your book sounds really good and kind of emotional. I can relate this to my novel because the main character of my book would also do anything for her best friend.

Your book is similar to mine, because the main character nearly sacrifices her life for her little brother and best friend. I think I would love to read your book!

In my novel, the protagonist Katie has a tough time fitting in until the big twist occurred. One of the most popular guys in school finally asked Katie to be her boyfriend and it totally flips her life around. The reason that I chose this particular section in the book was because Katie's has had many difficulties and she grew up with no parental support from neither parent. This part in the book allows Katie's outlook on life, and on the boarding school, to change and make things brighter for her. When Drew, the popular boy, asks Katie, "So, I wanted to ask you if you wanted to be... ah... exclusive" it really made me feel joy for Katie and changed my opinion about the book. I really enjoy romance and this was a perfect part in the novel to add it in; it gave Katie hope.

In my book, the protagonist Finn and her friend Chloe faked Chloe's kidnapping to get into a good college. Everything is going well, the media came to their small town, adults are worried, and Chloe's picture was on the news everyday. Finally, the police took in a suspect for questioning. It states, "They came for Dean during sixth period." The problem is, the person they took was the guy that likes Chloe and is friends with Finn. Finn realizes the terrible mistake Chloe and her were doing and wanted to stop it. But, Chloe acts like she doesn't care and is really desperate to get into the college of her dreams. I chose this section because it was then when Finn actually realized the holes in their "foolproof" plan and it was dragging in innocent people.

In my book, the scene that had the greatest initial impact was when the protagonist ,Gwen, time traveled for the first time. At this point in the book she did not know that she could time travel yet. She feels a sudden dizziness and the next thing she knows, she has gone back in time. She is then chased around by someone who thinks she is a thief. When she really just accidentally traveled back in time into their house. When Gwen says "There is was again that horrible dizzy sensation in my stomach." It shows how worried she was and it was a suspenseful moment leading up to the big moment of impact.

In my book, Need, the scene that had the greatest impact on me was when the protagonist, Zara, was in her room with her friend nick, while a pixie was trying to get in her room. Pixies in this story are not like ones you hear in fairytales. The pixies in my story are vicious, vampire like creatures. The pixie king needs a queen or else they get desprate and they need to fulfill there needs to drink the blood of teen boys and take parts of their soul. Zara is picked by the pixie king to be his queen and is coming closer and closer to taking her away from her life and her friends.

"My world ended with a bang the minute we entered the Compound and that silver door closed behind us." This scene was had the most impact on me because the main character Eli is experiencing the biggest turning point of his life. When the silver doors of the Compound closed the action gave me a feeling of solitude. This had the greatest impact on me because it made me want to read more of the book and see what would happen next.

    Switched, by Lissa Price

"I need you to be brave for me. Because once we get through this, we're going to have a home again." --Callie
"Really? Promise?" --Tyler [Callie's little brother]
It broke my [Callie] heart. "I promise." --Callie

In this scene, Callie goes back to her home to visit her sick little brother, Tyler just to make sure he is alright, before going back to Prime Destinations, who will control her body for another week. Tyler is mad because Callie left him with just her best friend Michael, but is also feeling sad and rejected because he thinks that Callie's going to leave him forever.

This really touched me, because I could truly "FEEL" Tyler's hurt and Callie's sadness at leaving him so she could earn money to make him better. If I was in her situation, I would definitely feel the exact same way, even though I don't have siblings.

Our situations are similar we both have someone important leaving the main character. My character though actually "needed" her master instead of just a feeling of abandonment. Your paragraph is well planned out and makes me want to read your book.

So far, the most impacting part that happened in my life was when she was describing her life that was spent with her nest friend, Patrick. She would always say to the reader, me, that he was always different from everyone else in a special way. "Patrick saw through me. I knew from the way he'd grin. Some people were happiest when others were unhappy, but Patrick was the opposite. Plus, he knew my famil as well as I knew Mama Sweetie." I thought that this quote was a good one to choose because to me, I thought that it showed what a real friend was. Someone who knew everything about you and was always there with you, was what Cat and Patrick's relationship was like; always bonded and always being there for each other (a bond that was like more than friends).

I forgot to include this with my blog but Cat and Patrick's relationship is very similar to my relationship with my best friend at school. We are always there for each other and always help each other with everything. Our bond compared to Cat's and Patrick's is very similar to my relationship with my friend.

My book, Black and White, is a book about two very close friends who get in a conflict when they are about to go to jail. They stuck someone up and only one was at charge and it caused conflict between them. My favorite quote was, "I heard the gun go off and shut my eyes tight. I couldn't imagine him actually pulling it." This was said by Black who was the look out for the shooting. This is my favorite part of the book because it is so essential and is the hook for the rest of the book.

The moment that affected me the most was when my main characters master died. It was the worst possible time to die when Eon (main character)needed the most guidance. A quote from the novel, "poison. I knew it the emperor knew it". He died from drinking poison mixed in with lime tea. This appealed to me because when Eon is in the most dangerous time of life when his enemy is in his territory and he still hasn't found the secret to her power.

Scarlet was thinking about everyone's relationships and search for love. "Because that's what my feelings for Hayden were, love." This quote is when she admits she really loves him, and not just a stupid crush. It turns the story around and she has to try and ignore him, so she doesn't fall in deeper.
