First Period - BQ6: Reflection

On your rationale handout, you made a prediction. Your assignment is to answer one of the following: How has the novel deviated from your prediction? Or, how has your novel followed your prediction?
Then, list the two McKee quotes you will be using for your poster presentation.

Format

First and Last Name

Original prediction

How your prediction changed or stayed (relatively) the same – in detail!

“Quote #1”
“Quote #2”

Note:

  • You do NOT have to comment on a peer’s post this time! (:
  • If you ended up changing your book in the beginning of the project, you will not be writing about your prediction. Instead, you will write what surprised you. How did your ideas of the characters, plot, and other elements change as the story progressed? You still have to include two McKee quotes in your post.
Due: Wednesday February 13 by midnight.

Original- I think it will be about a girl that gets stranded on a raft.

New- My prediction pretty much stayed the same, except for the end of the book where she gets to an island. The title "The Raft" kind of gave the plot away.

Original- I thought that the story would be about the experiences of a night watchmen.

New- My guess was totally far off, but it wasn't very close, either. It was a story about a night watchman, but instead of just having "normal" experiences, he instead travels back in time. His experiences are also anything but mundane. Over the course of the story, he is the subject of several aassination attempts, and he also attempts to change the course of history.

"“I get it,' said the prisoner. 'Good Cop, Bad Cop, eh?'
If you like.' said Vimes. 'But we're a bit short staffed here, so if I give you a cigarette, would you mind kicking yourself in the teeth?” "

"“No! Please! I'll tell you whatever you want to know!" the man yelled.
"Really?" said Vimes. "What's the orbital velocity of the moon?"
    "What?"
"Oh, you'd like something simpler?” "

      1. The protagonist has a conscious desire.

      2. True character can only be expressed through choice in dilemma. How the person chooses to act under pressure is who he is; the greater the pressure, the truer and deeper the choice to character.

Original- In the beginning I predicted that the trapped Eli would want to explore the outside world.

Now- My prediction was a little bit off but not too far from the original prediction. Instead of his wanting to explore the outside world after 6 years of isolation he is still wanting figure out the mysteries of the Compound. Other than the mysteries of the Compound he is still curious of what has happened outside.

    "There's a lot you don't know, Eli"

"You ever wonder what it's like outside" I asked

Original - I though this book would be about a black and a white male having a conflict on the basketball court.

Now - My prediction was pretty off. This book is about a black and white who are really close friends and come into a conflict together. They chose to stick beside each other through thick and thin and in the end remain as friends.

"This is where we first balled, and might just be the last. At least for a while."

"Black and White will never split!"

Original- Before I read the book, I predicted that the protagonist would die from drowning because the title of the book is called "breathless".

Now- My prediction was far off from what actually occurs in the story. My book was about a girl who grew up struggling without any love or close relationships with her family but only had real love for swimming. She is sent to boarding school where she is forced to live with a lie while she slowly works to way to one of the most popular girls in school. In the end, the truth comes out and everything turns out okay.

"Well, as it turns out, he isn't dead at all! He's just crazy. He's been in and out of jail and mental hospitals his whole life."

"Everything will be different soon. Everything will be new. I don't know what's going to happen. The only thing I know for sure is how to swim."

Original - I thought this book was about a girl with two different people or souls that were living inside her, because the cover showed a girl with two different colored eyes, and it looked like they belonged to two different people. It also looked like one of the eyes actually belonged to the girl's body.

Now - I actually guessed right! For the most part, my prediction was correct. It wasn't actually two people living in the body -- just two "souls".

"Then I felt it. The dizziness. The fainting. It was happening again."

"it's worse than that. It's murder."

Original- I thought this novel was going to be about a girl who is going to meet a boy and start a relationship, but also have some trouble with an ex. I predicted that chocolate would be illegal and that the main character would probably get him/her self into trouble.

Now- My predicition was accurate. Anya, the main character, does get herself in trouble a few times because of the family she comes from. Also, she does find a new love after she breaks up with her ex boyfriend. I did not predict, though, that her family had a long line of crime and that both of her parents had died when she was younger.

"The INCITING INCIDENT radically upsets the balance of forces in the protagonist's life."

"The PROTAGONIST has a conscious desire."

Original- She be alone or feel alone.

New- I am some what right. Scarlet likes to be alone and at one point she felt alone. She couldn't talk to Hayden because it was awkward from their kiss. Juliet wasn't around and she didn't talk to her mom. Nicole and her were in a fight so they didn't talk either. Scarlet was very alone at that point and had no one to talk to.

Quote 1- The protagonist must be empathetic; he may or may not be sympathetic.

Quote 2- However, the most memorable, fascinating characters tend to have not only a conscious desire but an unconscious desire.

Original prediction: "I think maybe because it has some old maybe Chinese writing with a dragon's claw it might not put dragons as the main character or anything but more like a descendant of an old ancestor associating with dragons."

My prediction was actually pretty close to what the real book was about how people practicing martial arts would "unite" with dragons through many generations

Quote 1: The INCITING INCIDENT radically upsets the balance of forces in the protagonist's life.

Quote 2: The PROTAGONIST may also have a self-contradictory unconscious desire.

Original– A book relating with a secret organization

New – My prediction was in some aspect correct. The story did contain 2 secret organizations in the form of gangs; however, the main storyline of my book didn’t revolve around the secret organizations. There was some correlation, but the gangs were more like side antagonists, It focused more on a boy with supernatural powers Tom Harvey, a quest for revenge on the gangs, and a desire to save his loved ones.

Quote 1: “In that moment of recognition, the audience suddenly and instinctively wants the protagonist to achieve whatever is that he desires.”

Quote 2: “The only way to know the truth is to witness him make choices under pressure to take one action or another in the pursuit of his desire”

Original- This novel is about a girl that has a big event occurring in her life.

New- In a sense you could say my prediction was right. However, the main character, in my novel, is a boy named Miles Halter. Miles does have a big event occurring in his life, his best friend dies in a car "accident." Alaska Young is the girl that dies, so you can see how my prediction could be right. Yet, my original prediction was not on the spot right.

Quote 1: " A hidden nature waits concealed behind a facade of traits."

Quote 2: " The finest writing not only reveals true character, but arcs or changes that inner nature, for better or worse, over the course of the telling."

What surprised me most was when I figured out that the main character in my story is actually part pixie. It turned out that the pixie king is her real father as well. This was surprising because pixies are evil, so that means that her dad is the king of the people that they are trying to get rid of and she might be
next in line to the throne.

Prediction: This book is a mystery, but nothing goes according to plan.

What actually happened: My prediction was only half right. This book wasn't about a mystery. It was about my characters setting up a mystery, and nothing goes right. This surprised me because I thought that it would be a book about the good guys solving a mystery and getting an award, but there were exactly any good guys in my novel.

Original: I had thought it was going to be about a boy who wants to stand out and be different.

New: The prediction I had made based on the cover of the book was relatively the same as to after I read the book. San, my main character, was a typical boy who moves schools so frequently that he loses track of who he is. He chooses to stand out by creating a fake personality. By the end he did get his attention and chance to stand out, but not as himself. San eventually tells everyone the truth and gains back some of his respect. For the most part I had a good guess, except for the change at the end.

My original prediction- From just looking at the cover of my book I could tell it had something to do with time traveling or history. There was a clock on the cover along with a girl in an old dress.

New- My prediction was correct. The protagonist, Gwen, inherits a time traveling gene. She then travels back in time and goes to balls and other historical things.

"The protagonist has a conscious desire."

"The protagonist must react to the Inciting Incident."

Original- I predicted that the main character would be wandering the wastelands of former North America and encountering effects of the radiation.

Now- I was just about correct. She wanders for a while with an 8 year-old girl named Ellie, and a boy in the military named Thomas. She encounters other humans that have gone crazy from the radiation. The radiation has heightened their senses and put them into a cannibalistic nature.

original~ That the main character finds a key to something. Maybe escapes from something or sets something free.

now~ I wasnt to far off. My character did escape form the prison he was in and is reunited with Claudia(the other main character).

Original: I think that something that is oslated or a place that isn't functioning as how it should be suddenly starts functioning or isn't isolated anymore because of that one thing or person.

New: I got part of it right but just got it backwards. She had a best friend named Patrick. They were best friends until he died while working late at night. So she got isolated instead of being isolated first. But later on in the story, she realizes that she needs to look at people in the inside rather than their outside appearances.

"True character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure. . ."

"The protagonist is a willful character."
