Fourth Period - BQ4: Memorable Moment

Prompt: For this post, I want you to think of the greatest moment of impact in your novel and tell us about it. It could be a moment of conflict, of surprise, or of joy in your novel. You could also think about a part of the novel that meant something to you personally.  Your post could talk about anything from a car chase that made your heart race to a moment of confrontation between two people that made you angry to a great part of a love story. Write about anything that made you think – that made you feel - more deeply than any other moment. Get creative!

Directions:
  • Describe the moment (in context – we need some kind of scene to visualize) that affected you most.
  • Write a quote from that moment that captures the significance of the moment.
  • Tell us why you chose this – why it had the greatest impact for you.
  • Comment in any (respectful) way you’d like (:

Due: Wed. February 6th by midnight

As Benson walked to his new academy, a tall guy told him, "Don't listen to Isaiah or Oakland. We can't get out of here." After he said that, he ran away. I think this part of the novel is when the suspense started to build on, because at that moment you know that there's something wrong with the academy. Also, this part made me imagine how flabbergasted Benson would have felt, because it was his first day and he was already warned to get out.

Your description of the quote was well done. I would agree with you that that quote show where the suspense it starting to come in at; and that the reader would figure out there was something wrong with the academy.

    2. I liked how you mentioned the suspense starting to build on. Although, who is Isaiah or Oakland? Did the "tall guy" mention who they were, or only say those words? It does sound like the academy has a problem. It makes me think how Benson possibly might feel excited for an adventure also.

I agree with what you said because I too, would have felt the suspense when he ran away. I also like how you knew how Benson would have felt. Well done!

I agree with what you said. I think that is very suspenseful reading. I am already wondering what is wrong with this academy.

"My brothers are all home tonight," said Nafai."Not lying in wait for father." The quote shows the ,protagonists, surprise at the thought that one of his brothers would kill his father. This is one of the most intriguing scenes for me; because it is kind of weird thinking that child would try to kill there parent.

The scene that had the biggest impact on me was when my protagonist, Tansy, finally figured out who was sneaking in the cellar where a special crystal was first found. Being slightly paranoid, she would sometimes doubt herself thinking it was Henry the ghost (a boy that had caused suicide in the same house she lived in) but decided to figure out who it really was. She took her camera outside as she would "lean closer and stare at the LCD screen, tensing when I recognize the number 10 beneath the name. Tate." Tansy thought that Tate, a boy who liked her, wanted to steal the crystal for himself. I didn't have what Tansy had in mind but thought of a connection made to Tate and Henry. It also showed truths finally starting to surface which was exciting.

The moment that shocked and surprised me the most was when Sammy, the protagonist, found out that her mom was gone and would never come back. "Mom is gone forever. I'm sorry." This quote really shocked me because Sammy expected her mom to be back and I too, thought her mom would come back. It impacted me a lot because I was really expecting for Sammy's mom to come back home and be with her. I tried to put myself in Sammy's shoes and tried to feel how she might have felt when she found out that her own mother was gone forever.

That would have shocked me too. It is sad to think that a loved one is never coming back to you. Your character must be going through a lot more pain than my character is. Aria was cheated on, but Sammy had a death in her family. That is much harder to deal with than someone cheating on you.

    2. Elizabeth Williams

That definitely shows that the character cared deeply for her mother. I think that any person in her situation would have been shocked and deeply upset.

I would also be shocked to find out that her mom didn't come back. In Perks, Charlie also has some family difficulties but nothing as severe as his mom leaving and not returning.

I too would be shocked when I found out my mother wouldn't come back. This moment reminds me of the moment in my book when Matthew realized that not many of his friends made it out of Safe. He kept thinking they were hiding in different safe houses, but it wasn't until he visited all of the safe houses that he realized that his friends were never coming back.
These two moments made me realize that I wouldn't be able to bear the fact that some of the people I see everyday might not be there tomorrow.

After Jomo used the steroid he got from Ganz, Jomo felt the effect of it and did crazy amount of workout in the morning. When he said "Whew! Yeah. Can I do another set?", that was the climax of the story. this is the most memorable moment in the story because the story doesnt get any better than this very moment.

The part in my novel that suprised me the most was probably when Aria found out Ezra, her boyfriend of 3 years, was cheating on her with a girl named Klaudia, who also "took" Aria's previous boyfriend away. "Aria's eyes widened. Ezra stared back at her. His lips parted, but no words came out. "Mr. Poet Man?" a second voice lilted. A blond girl stepped out of the shadows and wound her arms around Ezra's waist." This shocked quite a bit because I was really expecting Aria and Ezra's relationship to continue througout the book. I didn't expect Klaudia to steal Ezra away because she had already done that with Aria's previous boyfriend.

The moment when Ever finally decides to look up the meaning of different flowers, she looks up red tulips since that is the flower that Damen always gives her. The definition reads, "Red tulips- undying love" At that moment she accepts and returns the love that he has given her even though she doesn't think she deserves it. I picked this moment because it is just so sweet and romantic. It proves that true love is out there and all you have to do is try and be yourself.

I really liked the way you worded this. The sentences ran together smootly, and nothing seemed "choppy, or seemed as if were jumping from sentence to sentence without good transitions. The ending sentence was very well done, and really leaves the reader smiling. All around very good statement.

On the way home from a high school party, Charlie, Sam, and Patrick were having a great time in Sam's pickup truck. As they neared Fort Pitt Tunnel, Sam had Patrick pull over, she got in the back in of pickup. Charlie didn't understand what was going on, but Sam and Patrick smiled as if they have done this before. When they entered the tunnel, Patrick started driving faster and Sam stood up in a blue dress and let the wind turn it into "ocean waves." Patrick turned on a song called "Landslide" and continued laughing. Charlie later stated in his letter "and in that moment, I swear we were infinite." I really like this part of the story because one drive on the way home with his friends was enough to make him smile and laugh like he has never done before. It makes us realize that we don't need the newest phone or game to be happy; we just need family and friends that care about us.

The moment when Hayden pushed Russell off the cliff after they had been arguing affected me the most. After Luke and Hayden found Russell dead, Hayden said, "I killed him. Oh God. I killed him." This qoute impacted me the greatest because it shows that Hayden didn't mean to kill Russell and this moment was very intense to me. That is why I liked this moment.

My event, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of that. Instead of the confrontation ending in a death, mine ended with both of them living. Either way, I really enjoyed your quote and the event that you chose.

That sounds just like my book because while Elizabeth didn't mean to physically hurt Jack or his horse, she ended up extremely injuring both and ruining her life.

I like your explanation of the quote. My moment also resulted in the death of a character, but in mine the character was killed on purpose. Your moment reminded me of when Piggy from Lord of the Flies was pushed off the cliff(to his death), although I think he was pushed on purpose. Overall, I liked your quote and moment.

A memorable moment is when Fang comes back to the flock. When fang is seen walking up to house, the book says "Nudge drew back and faced us, looking utterly shocked". Fang had left the flock a year ago and came back without warning. The moment him and Max hug is amazing, because they were meant to be together and now they are reunited.

A memorable moment in my book was when John explains his personal background, and how he came to Earth. John explains his home planet of Lorien was attacked and destroyed, and how he was one out of nine children who escaped. During the attack, "the ground shook, and the skies were full of light and explosion." This really hit my heart in a personal way. In John's childhood, he had to run away from the attack, leave his family and friends, watch his planet go up in flames, and come to a strange new world where he has to pretend to be a normal human. Sometimes, I can be overly dramatic about my life, but comparing my life and his, I am a very lucky girl.

The most memorable moment in my book is when Matt is at El Patron's Birthday party. Since Matt is El Patron's clone, El Patron treats him with respect and demands that all listen to him. Matt never really used his powers to command until at the party. He commanded Tom to sit at a baby table, and when Tam Lin, Matt's bodyguard, went to bring real food to Tom, Matt said no. "No, you won't, said Matt. Tam Lin raised his eyebrows. Is that a direct order, Master Matt? Yes." The reason this is so important is because this is the first time anyone has listened to Matt and followed his orders, since everyone, other than El Patron, consider him as a animal.

A memorable moment in my book was when Matthew, the protagonist, and his two companions, Jack and Whisper, broke into the whitecoats' Asylum. This moment in the book is the first sign that they were going to fight for their Safe. Up until this point they were hiding in safe houses trying not to be found by shadows and whitecoats. In this moment they break into Asylum to confront the shadows and hopefully put a stop their schemes. This moment shows them taking their first stand against the antagonist.

As he is walking with Whisper, and Jack he sees the dark, creeping hallways and the dark staircase that "crawls upwards." When he sees this place he begins to understand why this place is feared in the minds of the many Safe residents.

The most memorable moment in my book was when Scotty, the antagonist, trapped Angel and tried killing her by burning the trailer. " Debris rattled around her. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't breathe! And then she could, but the sobbing made it hard to catch up." This really affected me because all odds were against her, yet Angel found a way to save herself and run away from Scotty.

I lived your description of the event in your novel because it helped me to understand it better. I also liked your character because she never gave up, and she managed to escape and save her life. I think many people can relate to wanting to give up, but having to push themselves through the tough times to get through it.

I think the moment that had the greatest impact in my book was when Iceman, the director of the school, came into the fort looking for Benson(who is hidden in a small room). I think that Benson's thoughts are best explained when he says, "My heart was beating heavily. I felt hot, like I was going to throw up." While Iceman was searching for Benson, I became scared for Benson's sake, because I have never been in a situation where somebody is looking for me and might kill me. After Iceman doesn't find Benson, he kills a random student. This action really made me become angry at him. The reason that I picked this moment as the most impacting because it caused me to show two emotions.

If I were in Benson's shoes, not only would I feel angry, but I would also feel slightly guilty after Iceman killed a random student. Though it wasn't his direct fault, if it weren't for Benson, that student probably wouldn't be dead. Knowing that would make me feel terrible.

I love the details in the way the author describes this scene. I feel like this part is very dark, yet mysterious. I especially like the surprise that Benson, kills a random student, because Iceman doesn't find him. Your novel seems really interesting!

The biggest moment in my book was when Jack finally figured out that his girlfriend Elizabeth and his archenemey, Jasper, were working together to try and make money off of his failure. "Elizabeth lied to me. The two of them-Jasper and Elizabeth are in cahoots. I'm sure of it." I chose this certain scene because it showed the heartbreak and loss of trust that Jack had in Elizabeth, and it showed that his suppposed true love was working against him. This scene is also important because Elizabeth also sabotoged Jack's horse for his race and the horse ended up dying.

One of the most memorable moments in my novel is when Isabel told Grace that the wolves were being hunted. Grace rushed out of school to stop the hunters by lying to Officer Koenig that her friend was out taking pictures. While hurrying to the hunters, Grace narrated, "I was already well into the woods. I had to stop them - warn my wolf - do something." This section of the book is the first memorable moment that kept me motivated to read on. I enjoyed seeing Grace's dedication and how Grace was willing to risk her life for the wolves. She ran into a forest where she could have easily been shot. I was inspired by and amazed at her bravery. This moment automatically made me want to read more and find out what happens next.

When Arley came home, she saw a flyer on the table. The flyer spoke of an important meeting that was going to be at the Spittoon the next day. After she had read the flyer she had thought this to herself, “she didn’t have to be a genius to know the important meeting had something to do with the city slicker from the train. One thing she would bet big money on-if she had any-was that all sixty-two grubs would be at the Spittoon at 7:00 the next night.” This quote impacted me because it is the first point of wonder in the book. Until I got to this point, the book was boring. After this quote, it grabbed my attention. I kept on wondering what would happen next. I imagined what plans the city slicker had in store for the town.

The biggest moment in my book was when Matt had a flashback to when he was in the alley. While he was in the alley he saw a dog, that did not seem to mind the bullets flying through the air and the bullets producing sparks when they hit the ground. In this event, there is a small kid, which Matt cannot identify, in his flashbacks because of his TBI, Traumatic Brain Injury. The quote "The child was lifted into the air, paddling his arms like a swimmer," talks about the child getting killed in the alley, but Matt cannot remember if it was him, or someone else who had shot the kid. It was hard on Matt because the boy looked familiar to him, but he could not figure out who the boy was. The quote is important because the main conflict in the novel was that Private Duffy, Matt, tried to unravel his past, or more specifically, this single event. This event made me want to keep reading because I wanted to know who the kid was, and what would happen.

Inside the walls of Enclave,a man and his pregnant wife were being executed for violating the law of marrying your own family(siblings). As the prisoner was about to be punished, the man cried out"Spare my wife!I'm begging you, spare my child!"
This scene from the book was the most thrilling part for me because I felt empathetic towards the pregnant mother and the husband pleading for his family life. Also, this scene captivated my attention because it shows the man true character.

A surprising moment in my novel is when Jack, the protagonist, visits his Father in prison. In that moment Jack sits down to speak with his Father across the Plexiglass partition, as the two are talking on the phone across from each other, his Father tells him that he is going to receive a package in the mail the next day. His Father then goes to talk about "Private" a secretive detectives agency for celebrities and wealthy people. Jack refuses to join, and as the security comes to take his father back, his father says," Have the life you deserve, Jack. Do great things." One week later Jack recieves the news that his father had died, due to a shank to the liver.

I chose this particular part, because this scene, I think, is very crucial to the story. I feel this, because it shapes and puts Jacks life in a different Perspective. This part also changes Jacks opinion on "Private" and wether or not he should continue his fathers legacy.

I believe the most memorable moment in Hurt go Happy was the moment when Joey saved Sukari. The author really described the setting that she was in. The walk down to her cage was surprisingly depressing; the cages of the chimps were dark, dirty, and the chimps looked horrified. My favorite quote from this moment is "Genetically chimps are over 98 percent human;that's more human than you people are." I liked that quote because it proved a point; the people who were supposed to take care of Sukari treated her badly. This is my favorite part of the story because, this was the part of the story I was waiting for. I was wondering what happened to Sukari, and now I know Joey saved her, it makes you want to know what happens next. Overall this part was fast paced in contrast to the rest of the story and I really enjoyed it.
