Inciting Incident is the event that upsets the balance of forces in the protagonist's life. In my novel, breathless, my protagonist's brother attempts to kill himself. Will, the brother, goes around knocking on doors around the neighborhood warning them about what was about to happen. At that moment he sat in front of his house with a knife and cut a deep wound into his arm that could have killed him if it weren't for his parents. This point in the book really changes Katie's life in a negative way. After, she is sent to boarding school to start a new life and try to forget about the hardships in the past but to start a new future.

DeleteI would hate to be in Katie's position! Your story sounds very interesting and I cant believe her brother tried to kill himself!

ReplyDeleteInciting incident
A radical change that upsets the balance in the protagonist's life.
In my novel the protagonist's finds out that her friend is a werewolf. This effects her negatively because she is finding all of this hard to believe. At first she kind of takes it as a joke, but she knows that it's true. Even though this effected her negatively at first, this is now a positive effect because her friend can niw protect her from pixies.
Eugene Shin
DeleteMy novel also contains an abnormal character being a positive effect.
Ishani Sharma
DeleteIt must be shocking at the time she confessed she was a werewolf. It sounds like a very interesting twist in the book.
Sydney Lundgren
DeleteMy book is almost the same except my character is a time traveler!
Nikhita Prabhakar
DeleteI love this book! I totally understand what you mean. Something similar happens in my book too.

ReplyDeleteCharacter Revelation
The character of Sam Vimes seems to be in murky shadow throughout most of the book. He can be compared to Batman, as he believes in justice, but may bend the laws to distribute it. His character is revealed when he ends up in the same inescapable corner that he had as his young self 30 years ago. Instead of trying to run, he decides to fight again, even knowing he will die.
I think this is a really good example of character revelation because it shows the characters change of heart throughout the story.

ReplyDeleteInciting Incident
The main character in my novel, Cat has faced her worst event. Her best friend who died while working, Patrick, has affected her life greatly in a negative way. Everyday, she goes to Patrick's house and usually spends her time there on Sundays before she goes to church.
An inciting incident is something that upsets the balance of force in the protagonist's life.
DeleteKathy Qi
DeleteI think that's good example because that would turn anyone's world upside down and is something people could really relate to.

ReplyDeleteInciting Incident
An inciting incident is an event that radically upsets the protagonist’s life. In my novel, Tom Harvey cracks his head open from a phone thrown at his head. At first there are no immediate signs; however, later on his life is totally changed. He begins hearing profound buzzing sounds, leading to his ability to use his brain like a mobile device/network, and lastly procuring supernatural powers. From Tom’s injury, his life was radically changed.
Logan Layn
DeleteWow that sounds so interesting, that would be awesome to have super powers.

ReplyDeleteCharacter vs. Characterization
True character is what is revealed when the character makes choices under pressure. Characterization is all the observable qualities that make up the character ( personality, values, etc). My protagonist, San, has built up his new background and totally changed who he really is. From the outside, San looks like an average "Asian" new boy. He starts telling people about Buddhism and Zen, and suddenly he's popular. He just had done some research on the topic, but the kids already think he is superior. His character is revealed as "cowardly" because of lying the whole year. His characterization started changing too. At the end, he figures out his mistakes revealing his " true character and personality".
Bryant Lee
DeleteHaha interesting how your book's main character is a huge asian liar. Of course not all of us are like that. My book is a girl trying to find her true self but ends up hiding as a boy and a lot more.
Sydney Lundgren
ReplyDeleteProtagonist
There are some things a protagonist must have, two of them are will power and a desire. The protagonist in my book, Gwen, certainly has a lot of will power. She chases her goals and does not give up. Her desire is to find out the secret her family has been hiding. Her will power keeps her focused on finding out that secret. Without a will power and desire the story would be boring.
Merrick Smith
DeleteSounds to me like a good book! I agree fully that without will power the book would be boring and thoughtless. It takes a lot to not give up, especially if you've been let down, or have been pushed around.

ReplyDeleteInciting Incident
It upsets the balanced forces in a protagonist's life. The main character falls in love with her sister's husband. It affects her negatively because it creates conflict externally and internally. She has to keep herself from saying things to him that hint she loves him. She also kisses him which creates external conflict.
Chelsee Washington
DeleteThat story sounds awesome! Another external conflict created by the kiss is a secret to keep from her sister! I wonder how it will all turn out!

ReplyDeleteCharacter Revelation
Character revelation is when the characters show you their true colors. For instance, When the book begins Robie seems to be a rebellious teenager. Who thinks shes such an adult. But when her plane crashes and she is stuck on a deserted island, her rebellious spirit quickly goes away. After days on the island, Robie is close to death and is finally rescued. Through her dramatic experience she sees things so much differently, and understands the true value of life.
Connor Boykin
DeleteMy novel goes something like that. However, in mine there are nuclear weapons going off all over the world. Both our faces must face a crisis, and learn to accept them.

ReplyDeleteInciting Incident
Inciting incident is the part of a novel where the characters life is disrupted and set off balance. In my novel the main character, Alex, is hiking to Lake Superior to pour her parents ashes in the lake. Her parents requested this before they died.
Soon after she starts hiking, hundreds of EMP's (Electromagnetic pulses) go off all over the world, nearly throwing humanity into the stone ages. Without technology, she must find her way to safety, and avoid the 'changed'. The 'changed' are other kids like her, but they have gone wild. She will come to experience things she never thought possible.
Brianna Maravilla
DeleteYour novel seems quite interesting. I wonder if you could tell me what its called?
Bryant Lee
ReplyDeleteI chose Character Revelation where you can find true character under pressure.
Almost throught he entire novel lord Ido was the antagonist trying to control the other dragoneye (One with the 12 zodiac dragons), but at the end he actually helps protect the protagonist (Eon/Eona) against an even bigger hidden antagonist. This quote is a scene from my book of him holding of Sethon the big bad army leader, "Ido's smile tightened into a thin line. 'I know. But he has to take me first.' Could he hold off Sethon?"
Merrick Smith
ReplyDeleteThe proagonist must be empathetic
Empathy means "like me." This is where the audience recognizes a certained shared humanity deep within the protagonist. There are actually a few times in the novel where I've stopped and have recognized empathy. Although this character, Anya, always gets into trouble and is part of a "crime" family, I do see eye to eye with her sometimes. An example is when Anya just feels worthless and it seems to her that she is under so much pressure. I definitley feel the same way most of the time. One thing I can really relate to was, she was in a school play and she just didn't exactly know how to juggle everything. I am in a couple of plays myself right now and I can say that is stressful and annoying at times. I feel like there is a lot of empathy between Anya and I.
Nikhita Prabhakar
ReplyDeleteThe protagonist must be empathetic.
Empathy: when the audience bonds with the protagonist because the audience would do the same thing that the protagonist did if they were in the same shoes.
I empathized with my character, Callie, because if I were in her shoes I would do anything to protect my younger brother, which is exactly what she did. I related with her in so many different parts of the book.
Brianna Maravilla
ReplyDeleteInciting incident- a part in the story that upsets the balance of the main character's life.
In my novel, Pudge(Miles) is automatically drawn to Alaska Young. He befriends her and eventually falls in love with her, and -I guess you could say- she with him. Everything seems to be great, but then Alaska dies in a car crash. She drives head on into a cop car on I-65. Alaska was a very deep and mysterious person, they don't know if she committed suicide or if the crash was an accident. Now, Pugde is left without her.
Kathy Qi
ReplyDeleteCharacters are not human beings
This means that although characters can be a human, they are more predictable and easier to relate to. A person may let someone down while a character would save them.
In my book, Accomplice, Finn is always on her best friend's side. Whatever they go through, it seems like she has an opinion but is too scared to express it. Her actions become predictable, but as she began to feel guilty about the mess they had started, the way she thought and acted became bold and opinionated. This could be related to me as she revealed more of her true character, which was a good and ashamed person. Soon, I knew more about Finn Jacobs than some of my friends.

ReplyDeleteInciting Incident
An Inciting incident is when the protagonist life radically upsets the balance of forces in their life. An example of an inciting incident was when Blue could finally see a ghost that was going to die within a year. a Non-seer can only see a ghost when they are that persons lover or the person killed the ghost.
Daniel Kim
ReplyDeleteInciting Incident
An inciting incident is an event where a characters life either goes uphill or downhill. In my novel The Compound the protagonist's life goes downhill when a nuclear war breaks out. Because of this he is forced to live underground due to high radiation levels.
