First Period - BQ 2: The Protagonist

Note: BEFORE doing this assignment, you must have read the first two chapters of your novel. (The first few pages of a novel won’t tell you very much about your protagonist – two chapters will.)

  • Review my grading standards before posting. Remember, once you hit submit, it is final.
  • Don't forget to put your first and last name at the top of your post and to comment on another classmate's post.
  • Comments should focus on similarities or differences you perceive between your protagonist and your classmate's protagonist or something that intrigues you about your classmate's protagonist.

Prompt:
Answer the following questions in paragraph form – no need to separate each answer by a space.

1) Who is the protagonist of your novel? (name, two characteristics, and his or her occupation [student, detective, etc.])
2) What is one thing you and the protagonist have in common?
3) What is one way in which you and the protagonist differ?
4) What is one quote spoken by your protagonist that you think represents them well from what you’ve read?
Due: Friday February 1 at midnight

The protagonist in my novel is a watchman named Sam Vimes. He is the commander of the watch, and a duke of the city, Ankh-Morpork. He is a hard-nosed man who is very world-weary. His stubborness is one of the few things that I have in common with him. Usually when I have my opinions set on something, they are very hard to change. The way that we differ, however, is that he is a deadly street fighter and is very well respected by the ruler of the city. One quote that really describes him to a "t" is "Let the record show that I took command captain's sudden attack of obvious insanity." Vimes says this quote after he knocks the watch captain out when the captain tries to shoot civilians.

Your summary of Sam Vimes is really good, and is really convincing me to read your novel. The only part I don't understand is the quote that describes him. What does "t" mean? I don't think our characters share many similarities, except for maybe the boldness and bravery.

    2. Your book sounds different from anything I've ever read! Sam sounds like an interesting character because he seems to have both a "good" and a "bad" side.

    3. Matthew, "to a 't'" is an expression. When Jimmy uses it, he means to say that the quote describes his protagonist exactly (to a 't').

The main character in my book is a girl named Robie, who lives in Hawaii. She is a rebellious teenager, but is easily frightened. A quote that would describe Robie would be the one i found during the first few pages of the book. "Do you want your nose pierced or not", "your parents will never come back here after they see that." One trait that we shared would be, our daring personalities. I also think we differ in a lot of ways, for instance Robie likes to be independent and often finds ways to get away from others.

My character Gwen is daring like yours, just in different ways.

Robie and the protagonist of my book, Katie, share the same outlook on life. They both are rebellious teenagers who seem tough on the outside, but on the inside they are still easily frightened. Another thing our protagonists share are their personalities. Katie is very antisocial and does the same thing Robie does which is that, they find ways to get away from others.

    3. It's going to be interesting for you to read this book in particular because it's from the perspective of a girl. Let me know if you enjoy the book!

1.) The protagonist of the novel is a teenage girl named Gwen. She has dark hair and she is British. She is also a student attending highschool.

2.) Gwen and I both dislike our siblings, even if it is for different reasons.

3.) Firstly, Gwen can see ghosts and I cannot. She has a family of time travelers, which I also do not have.

4.) Gwen, the protagonist, says "Weirdo." referring to a mysterious man standing outside her house. I believe this quote represents her personality as being sarcastic. She is sarcastic while talking to her sister a lot. It is one of her most dominant personality traits from my perspective.

Your character seems a lot different from mine. Mine is not magical, a little shy, but is somewhat rebellious. Your book sounds interesting!

The main character of my book, Switched, by Lissa Price is about girl named Callie Woodland. She is brave and courageous. She lives on the streets. Me and Callie are similar in that we both care deeply for our families and would do anything for them. However, Callie lives on the streets and was brought up differently than me. This is my favorite quote “Did Cinderella ever consider fessing up to the prince, that night she was enjoying herself in the fancy ball gown? Did she even think of telling him, oh, by the way, Prince, the coach isn’t mine, I’m really a filthy little barefoot servant on borrowed time? No. She took her moment. And then went quietly away after midnight.”

The two of our characters are very similar because they both care deeply for the well being of others.

    3. Your novel is really unique because your main character is homeless (at least, that's what I assume you mean by "she lives on the streets"). Reading the perspective of another culture is so valuable.

The protagonist of my novel is Tom Harvey. He is a student who is confident, determined, and brave. A similarity is that we have close relations with our grandmothers, and we are both determined. A difference is that he has superpowers that allow him to access networks of information and summon electrical powers. The quote “You’re going to stay away from Lucy and Ben…” represents Tom because it shows how much he cares for Lucy and Ben and tries to protect them.

our main characters are very different although they have powers the way that my character tries to hide her character versus yours which most likely doesnt. Having electrical powers sounds cool I might read it.

Our protagonists are alike because Anya, too, is very close to her grandmother. Your book seems very interesting and I would love to read this book! The fact that your protagonist has super powers is intriguing and mysterious.

    3. Tom is a strong character! He sounds like one of those characters most everyone can either relate to or admire. Superpowers usually mean action is around the corner - I wonder what that's going to mean for Tom!

The main character to my novel is "Eon", but thats actually her cover up name. Eon is female but she has a second personality, Eona, as of right now Eon knows very little about her other side. Girls are not allowed to practice martial arts in my book but she goes in undercover to be a dragoneye. Eon is very jumpy and she is a crippled female so she has the worst chances to become a dragoneye. I feel that Eon is a girl that hides lots of secrets like me. How we differ would have to be that she is very superstitious, it could just be the old chinese times but im not prone to superstitions like that. A quote here "I could not afford to let Eona come forward and bring her troubling desires into my mind" shows her double personality and how she has troubles keeping her hidden.

How you said you feel that Eon is a girl that hides lost of secrets; my protagonist doesn't necessarily hide secret, though she keeps to herself like your protagonist. That book sounds very interesting, I have heard of people with 2 personalities. It is very fascinating.

    2. Your protagonist is incredibly unique! This book is going to be a great read because Eon is so complex. Already, she is set up to be a powerful (her strong will and initiative), yet sympathetic character (her disability).

The protagonist of my novel is Scarlet. She is a student in high school. She is very kind and different from other students. Scarlet and I both like to help people and feel bad for others. Also Scarlet does not like to hang out with people on Friday nights, but I do. The author states, " From that moment, being kind and caring was what I was known for." She hangs out with people who are weird and different that others wouldn't even talk to. She doesn't always want to but she does it because she feels bad for them.

Both of our protagonists are different than the rest of their peers, but in different ways. Sydney hangs out with weird individuals because she feels bad for them, while Miles is pretty weird.

    2. Helping and feeling bad for others is a sign of compassion. I'm glad to see that you and Scarlet share this characteristic! It's important, and I'm sure you'll see how her compassion affects the series of events in your novel. Already, I'm inclined to like Scarlet because she is someone I would want for a friend.

The protagonist in my novel, Looking for Alaska, is a student named Miles Cavalry. Miles is six feet tall and very thin, he goes to the Culver Creek Prepatory school in Alabama. One thing miles and I have in common is that we both are shy when meeting new people. Unlike Miles, I don't like to think about dead people. Miles, on the other hand, likes to memorize the last words of famous people. "No. Those were his last words. Someone said,' Mr. President, you can't say Dallas doesn't love you,' and then he said,' That's obvious,' and then he got shot." Miles says this to his friend, Alaska, when they are at a lake. He is a strange kid, but his new friends at Culver Creek don't seem to care.

The protagonist of my story is Finn Jacobs. She is student in high school and has a best friend, Chloe. She doesn't talk a lot around other people but is very open to Chloe. We both like to talk to our friends a lot but don't talk to others that much. She is different from me because I don't lie to my parents a lot and come up with lots of crazy plans. She states, "This was it, my self-orchestrated debut." She tries to assure herself every time she lied, unlike me.

    2. I'm glad you don't lie to your parents often (: Trying to assure yourself every time you lie (or do other things) is called rationalizing or justifying your actions. I'm also glad you don't try to do this! Finn seems to have many flaws that we all have. She is a very believable character.

The protagonist in my story is named T.S. Eliot but he goes by Eli. He is just 9 years old and has a twin-brother. He has no occupation so he is just considered a student. A similarity between me and Eli is that we both care for our family deeply. A difference between the two of us would be that his life is a lot more difficult than mine is. In the begging of the book Eli states that "No sign of my twin brother. He was the person I needed the most." The quote shows that he not only looks out for himself but also looks out for his brother, and this shows that he is a very altruistic person.

My character, Alex, is similar to your character because they both care about their families. Even though Alex only has her aunt to look after her, she genuinely misses her mother and father, who are both dead.

    2. Interesting! Did you know that T.S. Eliot was an actual person? He was a brilliant writer. I wonder why the author decided to name him T.S. Eliot. Eli sounds like an amazing character. Why is Eli's life more difficult than yours?

The protagonist in my chosen novel, All These Things I've Done, is Anya Balanchine. She is a student attending a Catholic school in New York City. She is very naive and vulnerable, but also knows right from wrong. Something the protagonist and I have in common, is that we both dont like public attention. There are a lot of differences, such as she lives in a world where caffeine, chocolate, and paper is illegal. Also, Anya likes the bad boys while I'm not very found of them. She explains herself well in the book when she states, "I'd allowed myself to be so witless and vulnerable."

The character in my book, San, is much like Anya in your book. San is very simple and easy to understand, but when it comes to making a decision he knows right from wrong. This shows how both of the characters are alike.

The protagonist of my novel, ASHES, is Alexandra Adair. She has a brain tumor, which took away her taste and smell. She is adventurous and sometimes hikes. Both her parents are dead, and she has few memories of them. It is unclear, but one would assume her to be a high school or college student. One thing Alex and I have in common is that we both enjoy hiking. One thing that sets us apart would be that she has memory loss, and I don't. A quote that explains her well would be when the narrator says,"What no one warned her about was that when you had no sense of smell at all, a lot of memories fizzled". Her memories died out because the sense of smell seems to bring memories to mind. Without it, she was losing memories of her parents.

The protagonist in my book is a 15 year old swimmer name Katie. She is very independent and antisocial in her little town of Little Hillsburg, Pennsylvania. Although her personality is strange, her and I share the same type of relationship with our older brothers. We both look up to them and have a very close relationship with him. On the other hand, Katie and I are different in many ways. She didn't grow up with a stable, loving family; they never spent quality time together and never bonded. Katie refers to her dad as "the Ghost" because he is always at work and never home to be with his family. She does, however, sum up her life and says, "A whole childhood, not so whole."

    1. It's so disappointing that Katie's dad isn't available to her. You might want to read into this as an example of subtext for when we do our poster presentations. What is the author saying about absent fathers and the children who suffer the consequences?

The protagonist in my novel is a teenage girl named Zara. She has a self depreciating sense of humor, and is known to be a bit of a loner. One thing we have in common is we both cherish our grandmothers very much. She has just moved in with her grandma in Maine and is adjusting to what life is like over there. Her grandma is helping her get over her step-fathers recent death, and is helping Zara get back on her feet to live a normal teenage life. We are different from each other because she's a loner and im pretty much a social butterfly. From what ive read so far, the best quote that shows her personality is "I dont deserve this".

The protagonist of my novel is a student named San Lee. He is an average kid at school, despite the fact that he is enrolled in a new school every 6 months. Overall he is sweet. San Lee is a very generous and hardworking person, which I think is similar to me. However, he decides to change who he is at each new school to blend in, which is different from who I am. During one of San's classes, he was challenged by Jones, another student, about a question asked in class. In response, San said," If a monkey howls and nobody listens, is he still a monkey?" In this case, the teacher took his side and rewarded him. This represents San as a strong and independent person.

The protagonist of my novel is a teenager named Cat. She is a regular teenage girl who lost a friend named Patrick who got killed in front of his work, which was a gas station. She can be a rascal sometimes, has so many relatives and really close friends that look over her everyday like she's part of their family. The similarities that Cat and I have in common is that we both believe in the bible and God, or we are both Christians. One difference that I have in common with Cat is that she isn't jealous of anything. I don't think I get jealous that easily. I pretty much don't get jealous of everything, so there's one difference that I have with Cat. From this book, one quote that represents that "It made me think of her Bible, in particular." This quote represents that whatever she thinks or sees something, it would always remind her about someone who passed away earlier, like Patrick and her Mama Sweetie.

The protagonist in my story is Neeve and Blue. Their occupation and appearances in my novel is currently unknown. I feel like me and the protagonist has nothing in common that we share. But, the differences is that they can see things which normal people can't. And I can't see what they can see. "Gansey was nearly gone now, fading into the church, or the church fading into him. Blue's voice was breathier than she would have liked. 'Why--- why can't I see him?' ".

I have two protagonists in my novel, Finn and Claudia. Finn, who is brave and selfless, is a prisoner in Incarceron and Claudia, who is loyal and stubborn, is the soon to be queen. Out of both of the characters, i think that i am most like Claudia- stubborn and selfless. We are different in that Claudia was raised in a very luxurious home. She can be a little arrogant sometimes.
